About Therapy

You Came Through the Heat and the High Water

You’ve chosen to move toward something different.

My office sits in a vintage building in Montrose, the historic heart of Houston. You came through the heat and the high water to get here.

You push open the wooden door and find a sun-filled waiting room. I welcome you into the fireside room, which is more a space of connection than an office.

Greens and blues and a rainbow of color greet you. We sit together, and we take a breath.

What I’ll Ask You First

You arrive not quite sure what to say.

That’s part of why I ask questions. They’re gentle ones, and they help your story begin to come out on its own.

What brings you here today? What do you want to be different?

How have you managed so far? What’s keeping you from what you really want?

I ask a lot of questions, but never in a way that feels like an interrogation.

Going Beneath the Skills You’ve Already Learned

You’ve already done some of this work. You’ve learned the coping skills, practiced the techniques, read the books.

And still, something older keeps running underneath.

This is the part of therapy I care about most. The skills help you cope.

The deeper work asks where the pattern came from in the first place, and what it’s been protecting all along.

We go slowly. As we talk, I take notes, and the pen keeps track of your story, so you don’t have to.

Being paid attention to this closely, you start to feel heard and seen and accepted, exactly as you are.

The Moment Your Eyes Open

Sometimes, it happens early. Sometimes, it comes after we’ve worked together for a while.

At some point, I ask a question that lets you see something in a new light.

Your eyes open. You begin to learn the questions to ask yourself, the ones that stay with you long after a session ends.

And the old loop no longer runs the way it used to.

I love watching this happen. You gain insight and meet a deeper understanding of yourself with gentle compassion for the self that endured and overcame adversity.

My hope is that you take that insight and self-compassion and, with intention, build a life without regret. A life where you can fully become your most authentic self.

About Lisa VanVleet, PhD, LCSW

A Psychology Geek Since Middle School

I’m a bit of a psychology geek, and I can remember reading about mental health as early as middle school. I’ve spent my life learning more and realizing there’s always more to know.

What’s Behind the Letters After My Name

My undergraduate degree is in psychology, and my master’s is in social work.

From there, I earned a certificate of psychodynamic studies from the Center for Psychodynamic Studies after completing a two-year fellowship, and my doctorate in clinical social work is from Smith College School for Social Work.

I’ve also published a dissertation on Spiritual Trauma with LGBTQIA+ individuals, an issue that’s personal to me.

In My Private Life

In my private life, I have raised children who are now adults, and I have a fifth grandchild expected soon. Most people say I don’t look old enough to have a grandchild.

Despite raising a family, I remain a feminist. I am happy to say that I am an ally to queer and marginalized folx and recognize the impact of bias and discrimination.

Find the Depth You’ve Been Looking For

If you’ve done the skills and still sense something older running underneath, that’s the work I do.

I offer a free consultation. It’s a chance to talk, get a feel for one another, and see what it feels like to be truly seen.

Take the Next Step Toward Your Best Life

Begin the Deeper Work

If you've read this far, some part of you is already leaning toward the deeper work.
The skills brought you this far. The deeper work is how the old gravity loosens its grip, how three in the morning gets quieter, how the color comes back up.
This is the work I'd be glad to do beside you.
